Maine COVID-19 Deaths Reach Winter High, 80% Fully Vaccinated as Dr. Shah Leaves for US CDC
Mainers are experiencing the highest hospitalizations and deaths of the winter, mass majority are fully vaccinated
As Dr. Nirav Shah leaves his post as Director of the ME CDC to the 2nd in command a the US CDC, Mainers are experiencing the highest hospitalizations and deaths of the winter. According to his former office, the mass majority are fully vaccinated in each category.
On Thursday, 2/16/23, COVID-19 associated hospitalizations have jumped to winter high of 176 patients across the state. That’s the highest number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 since October 28, 2022.
The current rate of hospitalization is 13 per 100,000 residents, the 5th highest among US states, according to NYT COVID-19 Data Tracking.
These rates include an increase of 60 new hospitalizations from 2/6/23 to 2/13/23, of which 45 were fully vaccinated (SOURCES: ME CDC COVID-19 Breakthrough Data, 02/06/23 and 02/13/23 Updates).
With a rise in hospitalizations, comes the likelyhood of a rise in deaths. Over the last 7 days, ME CDC has reported 40 deaths associated with COVID-19, another high for this winter. Of those deaths, 80% (35 of 40) were fully vaccinated according to ME CDC data (SOURCES: ME CDC COVID-19 Breakthrough Data, 02/06/23 and 02/13/23 Updates). NYT COVID-19 Data also reports that Maine has the highest current death rate among all states.
This is not an outlier, it is sadly the norm. This past week marks the 54 consecutive data update when the fully vaccinated have made up the majority of hospitalizations. Dating back to March 4, 2022, the fully vaccinated have made up 73.2% of cases, 72.9% of hospitalizations and 74.2% of deaths associated with COVID-19.
As Dr. Shah moves away from Maine and becomes the Deputy Director of the US CDC in Atlanta, more fully vaccinated Mainers are being hospitalized and dying from COVID-19. These numbers represent individuals and families that trusted voices like his over the past 3 years to keep them safe, out the hospital and alive.
To date, the ME CDC has reported a total of 131,234 COVID-19 cases, 2,729 Hospitalizations and 971 Deaths associated with COVID-19.
