COVID Hospitalizations at 3 Month High, as ME CDC Neglects Breakthrough Data
Rate of Death among Fully Vaccinated Hospitalizations 33% higher than Not Fully Vaccinated
COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Data has not been updated by the ME CDC since August 16th. This data has been updated on a weekly basis since it first appeared on the ME CDC website in August of 2021, normally on Fridays before changing to a Tuesday update during the summer.
ME CDC has continued to update other COVID-19 data points in the past few weeks. Since August 16th, 12 Mainers have lost their lives due to COVID-19 and hospitalizations associated with COVID-19 have increased from 130 to 162 as of today, 8/31. That’s increase of 25% in just 14 days time, and a nearly 3 month high. The last time hospitalizations reached above the 162 mark was on June 5th, when 169 Mainers were hospitalized with COVID-19.
Due to the neglect of the ME CDC to update the Breakthrough Data in a timely and transparent way, we do not know the vaccination status of those who have died or those who have been hospitalized.
However if the last 2 weeks were to keep with the ME CDC data trends over the last several months, we can assume that the vast majority of were fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
The update provided on 8/16 marked the 24th consecutive week that the Fully Vaccinated were marked as the majority of COVID-19 associated hospitalizations. From 3/4/22 to 8/16/22, the fully vaccinated made up 71.5% of all COVID-19 Associated Hospitalizations and 76.3% of all deaths associated with COVID-19.
Using these data as a base, we can calculate the rate of death among those hospitalized in each group. The rate of death among COVID-19 Hospitalizations for the fully vaccinated was 3.4 deaths per 10 hospitalizations. Among the unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated, the rate was a 33% lower at 2.6 deaths per 10 hospitalizations.
It seems the ME CDC wants us to stop looking at the data, and just believe what they say. They have lost the trust of the Maine people, and they have done it by continued poor and inconsistent presentation of data and a severe lack of transparency.
As schools open for the year and a new omicron specific vaccine is set to be authorized for emergency use, it’s even more necessary that we continue to rely on data. We surely cannot rely on the words of leaders like Dr. Shah or Governor Mills.
