900 Fully Vaccinated Mainers have Died of COVID-19, from ME CDC Data
80% of Recent Hospitalizations, 82% Recent Deaths also Fully Vaccinated
Maine is in the midst of a COVID-19 surge in cases and hospitalizations. There isn’t enough data to link this to the new XBB variant, but Maine is in the midst of the first winter spike. Although a far cry from the initial Omicron surge last winter, the latest increase cases, hospitalizations and deaths is the largest of the season. Over the last 14 days, Maine’s COVID-19 cases are increasing at the 2nd highest rate among US States, per NYT COVID-19 Data Tracker.
According to ME CDC Breakthrough Data, 70% of these cases are fully vaccinated (click here to see the KMF ME CDC Breakthrough Data Log).
80% of Recent Hospitalizations are Fully Vaccinated
For the 2nd week in a row, Maine CDC’s COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Data shows that 80% of new hospitalizations were fully vaccinated. From 01/02/2023 to 01/09/2023, ME CDC Data updates show that 69.5% of new cases (1183 of 1701), 79.8% of new hospitalizations (67 of 84), and 80% of recent deaths (16 of 20) were fully vaccinated (sources: ME CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Data updates, 01/02/2023 and 01/09/2023).
82% of Recent Deaths are Fully Vaccinated
Over the last 4 weeks (12/19/22 to 01/09/23), ME CDC has reported 34 new deaths associated with COVID-19, including 28 (or 82.3%) that were fully vaccinated. That highest percentage of fully vaccinated deaths associated with COVID-19 over a 4 week span since the data has been made available.
ME CDC first reported on Breakthrough deaths in August of 2021. Since then, 51% of all COVID-19 deaths in Maine have been fully vaccinated. This percentage climbed significantly over the last 9 months. Since March of 2022, 73% of all deaths in Maine associated with COVID-19 have been reported by the ME CDC as fully vaccinated.
900 Fully Vaccinated Mainers have Died of COVID-19
ME CDC’s latest update to Breakthrough Data also marked a somber milestone as 900 fully vaccinated Mainers have now died due - at least in part - to COVID-19.
For perspective, that’s 22% more deaths than the first 12 months of the pandemic. From the first days of the pandemic in March of 2020 to Feb 28, 2021, there were a total of 703 deaths associated with COVID-19.
