80% of Recent COVID-19 Hospitalizations Are Fully Vaccinated, from Maine CDC Data
COVID-19 Hospitalizations increase by 50% over the last 3 weeks, Dr. Shah doubts trend will continue due to high vaccine rate AND previous infections
Strained hospitals are already crowded with flu, RSV cases and over the last few weeks and now COVID-19 hospitalizations are increasing again. As of Friday 1/6, there are 152 Mainers hospitalized with/for COVID-19, more than a 50% increase over the past 3 weeks when just 99 patients were hospitalized across the state on 12/16/2022.
Maine CDC has provided another weekly update to their COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Data, giving a first look at the real world evidence of vaccine efficacy in the new year and since the XBB variant became dominant. According to ME CDC Data, from 12/26/22 to 1/2/23, 73.5% of new cases (768 of 1045), 80% of new hospitalizations (28 of 35) and 9 of the last 11 reported deaths were fully vaccinated (Sources: ME CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Data Updates, 12/26/22 and 1/2/23).
Dr. Shah: 96% of Maine has “high level of immunity”
Our good friend Joe Lawlor of the Portland Propaganda Herald reported on the rise the new XBB variant this past week. He was able to gain access to Dr. Shah, who has not held a press briefing on COVID-19 since May of 2022. Lawlor said that Shah believes 96% of Mainers have a high level of immunity due to vaccines and previous infections.
Most likely, the 96% comes from a combination of the number of Mainers vaccinated (over 1M) + the number of unvaccinated COVID-19 cases (about 145k since the vaccine was available). It is worth noting that this is the first time the percentage has been widely reported.
It’s also the first time that Dr. Shah has reference natural immunity along side of vaccinations as a legitimate against COVID-19 infection.
Notice, however, that PPH and Dr. Shah are continuing to propagate the complete myth that the COVID-19 vaccines provide immunity against infection. PPH reporter Joe Lawlor, who is widely read, fails to ask for any data to back up this claim. This is medical misinformation at it’s finest. Immunity is defined in the Taber’s Medical Dictionary as, “a development within the body of antibodies… that neutralize or destroy the infective agent.”
Over and over again, it has been demonstrated that the COVID-19 Vaccines do not protect against infection. Real world data tracked by Dr. Shah’s own office demonstrate this fact.
Maine CDC COVID-19 Breakthrough Data shows that 64% of all reported COVID-19 cases in Maine were fully vaccinated from January 1 - Dec 31, 2022. The percentage of fully vaccinated among all reported cases in the last 9 months has now increased to more than 73%. In the last 2 weeks, 77% of new reported COVID-19 cases were fully vaccinated (click here to view the KMF Breakthrough Data Log).
This has been true since the vaccines were rolled out, as the shots were notoriously not tested for transmission. Report, after report, after report, after report - I could go on - has verified this reality.
At this point, it is pure myth that the vaccines have a significant immunizing impact. And yet Dr. Shah and the Portland Press Herald continues to spin this myth.
Dr. Shah also stated that he did not expect the new variant to increase hospitalizations at a similar rate to a year ago.
In January of 2022, Maine was being hit with a significant wave of the omicron variant, which caused deaths and hospitalizations to spike across the state, spiking to over 400 hospitalizations in January of 2022 before beginning to drop in February.
Dr. Shah doesn’t think that we are headed that same direction, due to the “pretty big boulder” of Maine’s vaccination status. As always, Dr. Shah is leaving out some important details in order to push the narrative that, “vaccines work,” seemingly helped along by reporter Joe Lawlor who refuses to ask any critical questions of the state’s CDC Director.
The Omicron spike in Dec ‘21 and Feb ‘22 occurred even as 66% of Mainers were considered “fully vaccinated.” Today, more that 76% of Mainers are fully vaccinated. Of those who have taken the initial series of shots, 90% have taken at least one booster.
Additionally, it’s been reported that 1/3 to 45% of Maine’s COVID related hospitalizations were “coincidental.” Meaning that inpatients tested positive after being hospitalized for a different issue. Yet again, the press fails to ask the pertinent question to obtain the necessary knowledge: “How many of the current hospitalizations are coincidental?”
The PPH article focuses on the immunity of Maine’s population as a “pretty big boulder” that should ward off any increase in hospitalizations. It would only seem natural to an honest reporter to ask, “how many of those currently hospitalized are fully vaccinated?” But that vital information never appears in the article.
Joe, let me fill in some blanks for you.
From 12/19/22 to 1/2/23 ME CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Data updates have shown that 77% of cases (1425 of 1846), 74.2% of new hospitalizations (49 of 66) and 9 of the last 11 deaths associate with COVID-19 were fully vaccinated (sources: ME CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Data Updates 12/19/2022 and 1/2/23).

I would love to see the data comparing completely unvaccinated and how they fare. If you have had even one shot your immune system has been damaged.
